If you get one with the correct code version, it works fairly well.
We ordered two of these. Little did we know, they would not be the same. We were unable to select a Spanish keyboard in the “enter translation” mode which is text translation. Without the tilde and accents, typing a Spanish phrase is a no-go. After comparing the two devices, we found that “System update” was missing from the device that would not change keyboards. The device that worked correctly has app version 3.8.1. The device that would not support the Spanish keyboard was app version 3.8.0. There is no contact or website information in the manual or on the box. We returned the 3.8.0 version for a refund because we did not trust which version we would get as a replacement.So, if you get app version 3.8.1, this 4 star review applies to that device. If you have 3.8.0, you will not be able to update the app or use different keyboards for text translation.Overview: I am a native English speaker with an intermediate level of speaking Spanish. This review is solely based on the English-Spanish/Spanish-English translation since that is what I could verify and test.Battery: It is difficult to easily test battery time because a percentage is only shown when the device is “OFF” and charging. In normal operation, only a battery bar is shown. I would have to turn “OFF” and then plug-in to get a percentage. Based on reasonable use which means offline (no WiFi), minimum photo (camera) and majority being voice translation, the battery drops about 10-15% per hour. WiFi enabled and heavy photo use drops about 20-25% per hour. Their claim of 8-10 hours of real time translation seems hard to reach with no test criteria for that number. I think you are looking at about half that time moving between various translate options.Offline: The device does work offline for Voice, Photo, and text translation; however, the vocabulary is limited and you need to stick to basic conversational words. If you expect to offline photo translate a magazine on the airplane, many words will be unknown. I did a simple voice and text sentence: “I forgot my hat in the car”. Offline, the Spanish translation was “I left my hat in the car”. So, it did not know forgot (olvidar) but did substitute left (dejar). Online, the translation correctly used Spanish olvidar (to forget). There are some other quirks I stumbled upon. For example, if I typed just “hat” (offline) in English, it correctly showed Spanish “sombrero”. However, online, it showed “hay” (there is) in Spanish which is not correct. Typing (online) “blue hat” showed “sombrero azul” which is correct. So, blindly accepting a translation could result in the wrong word in any language.Online: It does work better online with access to a larger dictionary. You still need to enunciate and not speak too rapidly. I still had to repeat some phrases (English or Spanish) to get the translation shown correct.Photo: I like that you can take a picture and then frame the text (using a superimposed box) to only translate what you want. It works well online and skips words offline.Voice Readback: I like that you can (in Settlings) adjust the speed at which translation is audibly read. You can slow it down for the non-native language- in my case Spanish.Speed: I found translation speed acceptable. Short phrases are fairly fast. If I read a paragraph from a Spanish book (slowly) there was more delay.Despite the claims of 98% accuracy, you need to use this as a tool for simple communcation. Keep phrases short and basic. I would speak in your native language and verify it captured that correctly before then translating that in another language.If expectation is a seem less no error translation, none of these devices are there yet. If you can tolerate some errors and maybe some laughs on the other end, but can get basic communication across, that is what this device with achieve.
