Great boards for grid powered projects.
Great boards if power use isn’t a factor, they work for Meshtastic, meshtastic is still a hot mess.In the past I have used Heltec development boards for IoT Product development projects and they are high quality and suitable for the job (Depending of course on the exact specs and job one is doing). This board has an ESP32-S3 microcontroller and it’s great for components which don’t particularly need sleep mode and which need LoRa. Other boards are avaialble from Heltec which are far better for node devices which run on batteries and need to use very little energy so that batteries can last years instead of days.I bought this order to try messing around with Meshtastic and it’s been an interesting and enjoyable little project. What I can say is that Meshtastic itself is far from being a product but might qualify in it’s current state of readiness as a technology in it’s very early days of development. It does work, and it does work more or less predictably, but each component has a very long way to go before one might call it a product, and longer still before it coiuld become a consumer product. The software is still buggy and unintuitive, the structures are unclear and often the software has requirements which are poorly documented for the the use of multiple features which are mutually exclusive. If you enjoy poking around and experiementing then it’s great fun. Meshtastic can’t effectively be set up on it’s own without a computer set up to be a development machine with various packages and configurations. Once it’s set up it can be used with just a phone app and the dev board and power supply. For these boards I recommend a power pack rather than a rechargable battery.The boards themselves are great, they work very well, they’re high quality and the support community is large and long established. In this last project the boards gave no difficulty at all, all of the challenge was with the Meshtastic software.

Feature-packed board that runs solid out of the box
This ESP32 LoRa V3 board is a great starting point for Meshtastic or other LoRa-based IoT projects. The built-in battery is a nice touch and holds a solid charge, and the pre-attached OLED screen makes it easy to monitor what’s going on without needing to connect externally. Setup was straightforward and the board synced up with other nodes quickly.The antenna included is decent for general use and the SX1262 chipset gives reliable long-range performance. One small gripe is the USB-C port is a little recessed, so not every cable fits snugly. Swapping to a thinner plug fixed it, but it’s something to be aware of. Other than that, the build quality is good and the onboard features make it easy to test, deploy, and tweak without needing a lot of extra gear. Great value for anyone working with LoRa or Meshtastic.

Decent for experimenting
These are a decent intro to Lora and Meshtastic. The hardware is solid but I can feel the effect of tariffs and inflation in the pricing. As little as a year ago these were probably 20-30% less.The antenna included in the two pack is not the greatest but for same room or same house or with line of sight it’s acceptable for exploring.If I had a do-over I’d buy this kit with an SMA adapter and an external antenna that I could mount to a roof or an outside wall.And I’d probably go for the seeed studio 1000-e for mobile use.I like the little OLED display; it’s readable in a car when it’s bright outside. Very tiny text but legible.This works via wifi, bluetooth, or serial over usb which makes it quite versatile.It runs warm given it is an esp32 platform, so probably needs AC or at least airflow and shade for operation.Flashing was not difficult but I had to learn how to put it in programming mode.Basically connect the device to a computer via USB, hold the top left button and press the bottom button once. Release the top left button after a few seconds, maybe 5 or so. The screen will be off but the device should be powered on and in programming mode. This should then work with Meshtastic’s flasher via any Chromium based browser with USB to Serial support.
