I’m happy with its performance and value.
This NETGEAR 8-port switch is a solid choice for small networks. It’s easy to set up and provides reliable gigabit speeds. The PoE+ feature is a big plus, allowing me to power devices like IP cameras and wireless access points without needing separate power adapters. The compact size makes it easy to place on a desk or mount on a wall.

Great POE switch for a home lab
I was looking for an affordable POE switch to add to my home lab. I wasn’t going to be doing anything too fancy with it, but I did want the capability to remote into the switch and do some basic administrator of it, but nothing at the level of Cisco IOS. I already had an unmanaged Netgear switch in the lab, so I opted to stay with the brand I already knew and trusted, and look for model that offered POE capability. After looking at what was available, I went with the GS108PEv3, and purchased an Open-Box one from Amazon warehouse. Going this route, I save $15 on the switch and still had the guaranteed that is something was wrong with it, Amazon would refund me the cost. Luckily, I didn’t need to use this service, switch came well wrapped from the warehouse, with no obvious scratches or marks on it. Switch booted up right away and I immediately went through the paces of configuring it.First thing first, firmware update check. One was available and I immediately upgraded it. Came up right after the upgrade, so no chip problem there. Even though this is categorized as a managed switch, the actual settings are pretty basic, and easily understood. Next came the actual reason for this, powering up a couple POR devices I had laying about. Again, plugged them in, and everything came up as expected. Tested all the ports on the switch, and everything was communicating as expected. I will not be testing any network intensive products, so I do not expect this device to have any issues with the traffic I will be generating.Overall, I’m happy with my new additional my home lab. It adds the POE functionality that I wanted, and with breaking bank.

A review for the professional network engineer
This is a review for the NETGEAR 8-Port PoE Gigabit Ethernet Plus Switch (GS108PEv3). I paid $99.99 in August 2022.I’m a systems engineer for a large network vendor that competes with the one on Tasman Drive, thus I have high expectations from a switch that claims it’s managed, and supports vlans. I bought it because my company’s employee purchase program is suspended due to supply-chain issues. That said, I do not regret this purchase. The switch supports 48v PoE on 4 ports, VLANs on all 8 (1-4094), trunk and access ports, .1p, IGMP snooping, and even rate limiting. Pretty impressive for a $100 switch.Configuration is fairly easy, but there is one small caveat. My home network runs on vlan 4000, and my router is on a tagged port. The switch’s management interface will not work on a tagged vlan, thus I had to set vlan 4000 as the native vlan on the port to my router, otherwise it became unmanageable. It was an easy fix, but I’m writing this anyway as this may save someone a bit of time.Overall throughput is good, it can easily handle ~300Mbit/s.All in all, a good buy if you know what you’re buying.

Works, Simple, but a Little Pricey
This is a REVISED review after learning more about my network issues. The GS108PP is probably a perfectly fine switch, but time will tell. This switch seems expensive for what it is. However, I guess part of the price is for the POE feature. If you don’t need POE, skip this unit for less expensive switches. I needed POE. If you need POE, this is a good choice. It is actually “POE+”.I use UVerse gigabit internet (1000Mbps) by AT&T which includes a Pace 5286 modem. From the back of the Pace 5286, I ran a Cat 5e patch cable to this Netgear switch. When I initially connected my devices to this Netgear switch, one hard-wired desktop on the network would drop down from 1Gbps to 100Mbps for no apparent reason. It would hum along getting 1Gig speed, then drop to 100Mbps out of the blue and stay there unless I did a hard reboot of everything, flushed DNS, etc…..headache!In my initial review of this switch, I penalized the product with 3 stars because I thought the switch was the culprit. However, the speed reduction for the desktop in question also happened when the desktop was connected directly to the UVerse Pace 5286 modem’s switch (thereby eliminating the Netgear switch from the equation). So, the Netgear switch is probably not part of the problem. Thus, this is a revised review. Now, I think the culprit might have been my Cat 5e cabling to the device in question. I switched out the home-made Cat 5e cable for new store-bought Cat 5e and the issue seems to be gone (for now). I’ll post an update if things change.REVISED SUMMARY: So far, I can RECOMMEND the GS108PP switch by Netgear if you need “POE+”.

In a word – WORKS.
I know people tend to read and write these elaborate long reviews, and while sure, they’re often useful, the whole point of an *unmanaged* switch is that it be completely simple plug and play. This is. I’ve wired two full houses with these and never had an issue at all. Some general notes:- Works very well with the Ubiquiti WAPs, but get the EdgeRouter X, as the system just does not want to play nice with all routers.- PoE does a completely sufficient job powering the above access points.- Chaining switches, even different brands, pretty much no big deal. I wouldn’t chain more than 3, but I have this feed my office which has a 4-port to some fairly high traffic computers and it’s never been an issue.

A good POE switch
I have tried a few different brands of POE switches over the years to find that perfect switch for my needs and have settled on these little guys. I have worked with manufacturers who claimed POE+ or 1G speeds but did not deliver. Netgear POE switches just work. Nothing too fancy about them but they deliver what they promise and if you work with POE switches, that is always a good thing. I do have to say that you’re getting what you pay for with these switches so they’re my standard when testing other brands now.
