A top quality feature rich lock – but make sure you buy the right one!
My home is very much aligned with the Apple Home Kit world, so when I saw this Apple Home Kit-capable lock, I got it to replace an older and very simple fingerprint lock.Straight out of the box, it’s apparent that this is a top-quality lock. I had not heard of the brand name before, but the quality of manufacture as well as the excellent online help and installation videos put my mind at ease. This is made by a “real” lock company that knows what they are doing.One caution up front: This company has quite a few different varieties of this lock – some are Matter-enabled, some are Apple Home Key-enabled, and this one is fingerprint and Apple Home (but not Home Key)-enabled. What do I mean by that? This integrates with Apple Home very well, but it does not have the Apple Key card capability. You can lock and unlock it from your phone or Apple Watch, but only by using the Home app. It does not unlock using the Apple Home Key NFC capability like some other locks. There is an Ultraloq lock that does just that, but you give up the fingerprint capability to get that capability.Installation was very straightforward. It took about 15 minutes, but my door met all the measurement parameters that this lock required. It’s a pretty standard set of measurements for a door, and this lock can accommodate some variation, so I suspect this will work for most doors. The lock requires Wi-Fi for most of its functions, and it must be 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; it cannot handle 5 GHz Wi-Fi.Adding the lock to my Apple Home was straightforward, but note there is a note that says to ensure you add it to Apple Home within 10 minutes of inserting the batteries – I missed this note the first time and it would not add to my Apple Home, but once I followed the instructions, it added to Apple Home easily. Users managed through Apple Home can have their own code to open the door, but you cannot add fingerprints through the Apple Home app. To do that, you need the Ultraloq U Home app. In addition to managing users, that app also lets you load two fingerprints for each user. Once you have added the fingerprints with the UHome app, you don’t need to use that app anymore, everything else can be done through the Apple Home app.There is also a small sensor that comes with the lock and can optionally be used to let you know if the door is open or closed (as opposed to locked or unlocked). Note that this sensor only reports the open or closed status in the U Home app, and not to the Apple Home app.In use, the fingerprint unlocking is very quick. If locking or unlocking through the Apple Home app or Siri, there is sometimes (but not always) a short delay before the command is processed. You can see this in the video.Overall, I am very happy with this lock. It is clearly top quality and it functions well. If you want a very versatile fingerprint lock that works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, or IFTTT then this will work well for you.
